12 FREE Stencil Fonts for Paper Cut-Out Texts
In a previous post, I’ve shared some free script fonts that have loops and swirly tails to connect all characters into one path. They’re very helpful when you want to add custom texts to empty shadow box layers.
However, if you have a filled layer and want to decorate it with some cut-out texts, script font is not a good choice. You have to look for fonts that have gaps in their strokes, especially when your word contains A, B, D, O, P, Q, or R characters. When you subtract the text’s strokes from a filled layer, these gaps will become “bridges” to connect the inner parts of your letters with the layer.
Stencil fonts are what we need in this case. Stencil typefaces have been made for as long as people have been shipping wooden boxes. So, there are many fonts in the public domain now.
After searching around, I’ve found some interesting stencils that are free for commercial use. These fonts have big gaps between lines so you can use them in paper cutting projects.
Stencilia by Manfred Klein
Stencilia is a simple font that can match with many designs. I’ve used it to number layers in some of my shadow box templates.
DIN Schablonierschrift
DIN Schablonierschrift is also a clean font to read. It’s more condensed than Stencilia allowing you to type longer words in a narrow space. However, you must always use capital letters for this font.
Octin Stencil and Octin Prison
They are both designed by Typodermic Fonts. Octin Stencil is sans-serif and Octin Prison is a serif font. I think they are perfect for sports, school, police, construction and military themed design.
Lintsec
Lintsec is a serif stencil with large gaps between strokes which is nice to cut-out.
LeArchitect
LeArchitect is also a serif stencil with thinner lines that may be a better option for elegant designs like wedding or anniversary.
Sistemas
This font looks interesting. I think it will match with some Christmas designs.
Secrets Stencil and Sylar Stencil
They are absolutely great for astronomical and sci-fi themes.
Pixel Combat
Obviously, this font was inspired by video games. Why don’t we use it in game designs?
College
College is a rare elegant stencil that is free for commercial use. Its letterforms were inspired by the arches & columns of the buildings at the College de France. It will add dignity to wedding or anniversary templates.
Awery
Awery is the last font in this list. It’s not strong, bold and style like other stencils, but it’s the best choice to cut long sentences out of 3D papercut layers.
I'm still looking for more options for long paragraph. If you know any free stencil fonts that give a nice cut, I hope that you can share it with others in comment below. Thanks!
